[DhtmlXQ_comment0]sg 1964 Best GM Hu Ronghua Wins GM Yang Guanlin.||This game was selected as the best in 1964. It was plaed on the 4th of May 1964 and it was round 7 of the Chinese National Xiangqi Singles Competition.||At this stage, Hu had amassed 10 points, while Yang had 9 points. Winning a game meant collecting 2 points. Another player, Master Cai Furu was leading the pack with 11 points. Pressure was on both Hu and Yang as the competition was entering the final few rounds. ||By this time, Hu and Yang had met for 17 times with a record of 4W-4L-11D.||Despite their high capacity for drawing, most predicted that a win or loss would be the end result for the game as both players were desperate for points.||It was under such circumstances that the game began...[/DhtmlXQ_comment0]
[DhtmlXQ_comment1]The battle begins...[/DhtmlXQ_comment1]
[DhtmlXQ_comment5]At move 3, Hu starts with an unorthodox move![/DhtmlXQ_comment5]
[DhtmlXQ_comment8]As can be seen from the first 4 moves, both sides show their resolve to win the game. ||Hu was known for being comfortable with the Central cannon with 7th pawn advancement vs Screen horse defence with 7th pawn advancement opening. But, in this game , Hu decides to use the less volatile 3rd pawn advancement opening, to Yang's surprise. ||And the third move by Hu, C8+4, was a never before seen opening variation in the manuals of that time. ||After much consideration, Yang decides to move C8=9, also an unorthodox move, trying to return the favor!||If Yang moved H2+3, the game could progress into the more familiar 58 cannons vs Screen Horse defenceき???ガЫ.[/DhtmlXQ_comment8]
[DhtmlXQ_comment10]This move was made in the hopes of allowing the right chariot early entry into the game. However, critics have suggested that perhaps E7+5 was better as Hu could apply pressure on Yang's left flank with C8=3.[/DhtmlXQ_comment10]
[DhtmlXQ_comment16]Critics after the match suggested that Yang could have moved C9-1, threatening to capture the red chariot with C9=2 on the next move. This would disallow red from moving P7+1 now and would be a more balanced formation for black.[/DhtmlXQ_comment16]
[DhtmlXQ_comment20]With this riverbank horse move, black prevents red from moving H3+4 or P3+1 as black could move R8+3 to capture the red cannon.[/DhtmlXQ_comment20]
[DhtmlXQ_comment21]Under normal circumstances, most players would instinctively move R7=6 to pressure the riverbank horse. ||11. R7=6 H4-3||12. R6+2... and red would still have the initiative.||But Hu decides to sacrifice a cannon so early into the game, thereby adding volatility to the game. After the match, many praised Hu for this brave move so early into the game.[/DhtmlXQ_comment21]
[DhtmlXQ_comment22]Yang follows the line of thinking. This would be a reasonable move as it would add confusion and an element of uncertainty to the game.||Yang had 2 other choices, listed in the variations below.[/DhtmlXQ_comment22]
[DhtmlXQ_comment30]this was the move made by Yang.||It was considered to be a better move than C7=8!||Please click on the variation to understand why![/DhtmlXQ_comment30]
[DhtmlXQ_comment32]Yang was always known for liking to take the pawns![/DhtmlXQ_comment32]
[DhtmlXQ_comment33]Up till this stage, Yang has the material advantage but Hu has the attacking game! Most would agree that it was still an even game.[/DhtmlXQ_comment33]
[DhtmlXQ_comment37]A very very aggressive play! This shows Hu's fighting spirit and intent in his earlier days and this was what made him the champion of champions in that era. ||Yang could move R3+9 to take the elephant and it would quickly become a furious fistfight.||Some have suggested that Hu could have moved E7+9 to defend first.[/DhtmlXQ_comment37]
[DhtmlXQ_comment38]Critics have suggested that black has a few other choices.[/DhtmlXQ_comment38]
[DhtmlXQ_comment40]The fistfight begins![/DhtmlXQ_comment40]
[DhtmlXQ_comment41]Looking back at their previous encounters, the intensity of this game was never seen before!||Hu threatens to mate with R4+7![/DhtmlXQ_comment41]
[DhtmlXQ_comment42]Questionable move from Yang. ||After the match, most critics suggested that this was the move that cost Yang the game. ||With this move, Hu could use his cannon to take the central pawn and place Yang at a huge disadvantage.||C9-2 was the suggested move for Yang, and the various probabilities albeit very complex, suggested that the game would most likely to end in a draw.||But to be fair to Yang, under time pressure, one would not be likely to consider this move. Critics spent hours after the match studying the game to have discovered this alternative..[/DhtmlXQ_comment42]
[DhtmlXQ_comment43]Hu begins his assault![/DhtmlXQ_comment43]
[DhtmlXQ_comment48]What happened if Yang moved R8=7?||Please see the variation below.[/DhtmlXQ_comment48]
[DhtmlXQ_comment57]!!!||Most players would instinctively take the cannon with the pawn. But in this game, the value of the pawn is worth much more than the cannon! ||Despite under time pressure, Hu is still able to choose the correct way.||Some critics have suggested that P3=4 might be an even better move, finishing the kill even faster.[/DhtmlXQ_comment57]
[DhtmlXQ_comment71]Nice move!||Hu attempts to win with P4=5 on the next move![/DhtmlXQ_comment71]
[DhtmlXQ_comment72]Yang is forced to sacrifice the cannon to avoid this kill![/DhtmlXQ_comment72]
[DhtmlXQ_comment79]Up till this stage, Hu has managed to capture both pawns and was guaranteed a victory.||This was an exerpt from <<穝チ边?>> 7-8/June/1964.||The rest of the moves were omitted...||(not that I omitted them, except that all the manuals that I have ended the game here!)[/DhtmlXQ_comment79]
[DhtmlXQ_comment1_72]These moves were added by me.||Let's say black tried to go for a counter kill with this move...[/DhtmlXQ_comment1_72]
[DhtmlXQ_comment1_75]Red could also take the cannon and either way, it is basically red's game now.[/DhtmlXQ_comment1_75]
[DhtmlXQ_comment2_61]Red would now win as there is a kill with R9+4. The cannon is captured and red would be nearly guaranteed a victory.[/DhtmlXQ_comment2_61]
[DhtmlXQ_comment3_59]Mate![/DhtmlXQ_comment3_59]
[DhtmlXQ_comment4_59]And red would have the huge huge advantage.[/DhtmlXQ_comment4_59]
[DhtmlXQ_comment5_43]Red has no choice but to take the central pawn. The only move to make.[/DhtmlXQ_comment5_43]
[DhtmlXQ_comment5_45]Hu would be forced to make this move. If Hu moved R6=4 or R4=6, Yang could have used the discovered check by the cannon to win the red chariots over.[/DhtmlXQ_comment5_45]
[DhtmlXQ_comment5_65]It would now be a drawish game.[/DhtmlXQ_comment5_65]
[DhtmlXQ_comment6_56]why this alternative is also not good.[/DhtmlXQ_comment6_56]
[DhtmlXQ_comment6_64]Red has the advantage.[/DhtmlXQ_comment6_64]
[DhtmlXQ_comment7_54]why this move is also not ok.[/DhtmlXQ_comment7_54]
[DhtmlXQ_comment7_59]Red wins![/DhtmlXQ_comment7_59]
[DhtmlXQ_comment8_44]And black would win!!!!![/DhtmlXQ_comment8_44]
[DhtmlXQ_comment9_37]This was the variation suggested by critics.[/DhtmlXQ_comment9_37]
[DhtmlXQ_comment9_42]Yang would have 4 choices.[/DhtmlXQ_comment9_42]
[DhtmlXQ_comment9_53]Mate![/DhtmlXQ_comment9_53]
[DhtmlXQ_comment10_51]and Red would win.[/DhtmlXQ_comment10_51]
[DhtmlXQ_comment11_49]Red has the huge advantage.[/DhtmlXQ_comment11_49]
[DhtmlXQ_comment12_45]and Red gains back the lost material, and with a pawn so close to the palace, Red would have the obvious upper hand.[/DhtmlXQ_comment12_45]
[DhtmlXQ_comment13_37]And Hu would apply much pressure on Yang with this attack![/DhtmlXQ_comment13_37]
[DhtmlXQ_comment14_22]If Yang made this move,[/DhtmlXQ_comment14_22]
[DhtmlXQ_comment14_23]Hu would offer an exchange and it would still basically be Hu's game with the slight advantage.[/DhtmlXQ_comment14_23]
[DhtmlXQ_comment15_22]If Yang chose this move,[/DhtmlXQ_comment15_22]
[DhtmlXQ_comment15_23]Hu could counter with this move and still have the initiative.[/DhtmlXQ_comment15_23]
