[DhtmlXQ_comment0]sg best of the best 1982. ||This was the best played game in 1982, selected by Xiangqi greats Chen Songshun, Jia Titao...et al.||Liu Dahua vs Yang Guanlin||Opening: Central cannon with 7th Pawn advancement and pawn ranked chariot vs Screen Horse Defence with 7th Pawn Advancement and Edge Cannon for chariot exchange variation.||ECCOC45 中炮過河車互進七兵對屏風馬平炮兌車||It was the 10th round of the Chinese National Xiangqi Championships and two of the best Xiangqi grandmasters ever meet again! ||The date was the 11th of December 1982.||The battle that ensued is still very much studied even today. ||Although the game ended in a draw, the ferocity of the battle was breathtaking![/DhtmlXQ_comment0]
[DhtmlXQ_comment20]This was the opening that was used at that time. It still is.[/DhtmlXQ_comment20]
[DhtmlXQ_comment21]GM Liu starts the fistfight with this move.||At that time, this move was still being studied. It was used in regional competitions but had never been used in a competition of such scale. Liu was gutsy enough to use this variation, in the hope of surprising Yang. ||In the 60's, C5+4 or C1+4 were the choices that red had. ||R2+6 breathed life into this opening in the 70's. ||But never had this variation of H7-5 been used in such major competitions. It also reflected the ingenuity of Xiangqi players in that era. Many many contemporary openings that we take for granted evolved from that time.[/DhtmlXQ_comment21]
[DhtmlXQ_comment31]Liu pushes the 2nd file chariot across the river, placing pressure on black's left flank, while moving the central cannon to attack the other flank. The riverbank horse variation also shows his intention of controlling the river.||Liu shows that he had prepared well for this match and had studied this variation very very well. ||There is a saying, when the horse is at the center of the palace, things would be menacing. But Liu breathes life into this move.[/DhtmlXQ_comment31]
[DhtmlXQ_comment33]Yang edges his cannon for the chariot exchange. Yang chooses to gain material instead. Both sides start preparing for the inevitable all out fistfight.[/DhtmlXQ_comment33]
[DhtmlXQ_comment34]Yang plays this move after a long pause, sacrificing the horse, much to the amazement of everybody.||Great move!||This move adds much pressure to red's king and is versatile enough to counter anything that red can offer. It may seem like a quiet move, but still waters run deep. ||Yang defends and attacks brilliantly with this move!||After the match had ended, post game analysis showed that if Liu became greedy and played R6+2 to gain material, the entire back rank and throat rank would fall into Yang's hands.[/DhtmlXQ_comment34]
[DhtmlXQ_comment35]This was the move that Liu actually played. ||The following move shows Yang's brilliance should Liu decided to gain material.[/DhtmlXQ_comment35]
[DhtmlXQ_comment37]This move was deemed careless by contemporary review. P3=2 to block the black chariot would have been a better move!||Yang senses this danger and that is why he removes the pawn on move 20.[/DhtmlXQ_comment37]
[DhtmlXQ_comment40]Liu senses that Yang's attack is not as simple as it seems. He knows that the present sense of calm was not real and that a fiece battle awaits.||Yang is also not one to be messed with. He knows that the red pawn could ultimately cost him and so he decides to use the horse to capture it. ||Both enter midgame preparing for an all out fistfight.[/DhtmlXQ_comment40]
[DhtmlXQ_comment46]In the past few moves, Yang offers an exchange of chariots to strengthen his formation. ||Liu on the other hand forces the elephant to move to the riverbank to faciliate further attack. ||Both sides demonstrate their skills.[/DhtmlXQ_comment46]
[DhtmlXQ_comment49]Bold move by Liu! He sacrifices the important central pawn to allow increased mobility of his chariot.[/DhtmlXQ_comment49]
[DhtmlXQ_comment55]R2+4 would have been a better move! That way, Red would be more versatile and could traverse the cannon to attack the horse or choose to traverse the cannon to attack the pawn.[/DhtmlXQ_comment55]
[DhtmlXQ_comment58]Yang could also have chosen to move C5=4 and use the central pawn to attack.||But Yang chose to play this move, and a far-sighted move it was!||The real intention and effects of this move will only be seen after move 35. ||Yang was a master of such play![/DhtmlXQ_comment58]
[DhtmlXQ_comment70]The black chariot move to the palace corner at move 29 is now evident. Nice play! ||Yang was famous for making such seemingly innocent moves.[/DhtmlXQ_comment70]
[DhtmlXQ_comment71]A "fake" move by Liu, attempting to attack. This is in fact more of a defensive move, as you will see soon![/DhtmlXQ_comment71]
[DhtmlXQ_comment73]A lure tactic from Liu, practically inviting the black horse to come and check![/DhtmlXQ_comment73]
[DhtmlXQ_comment74]Yang goes ahead with his attack anyway.[/DhtmlXQ_comment74]
[DhtmlXQ_comment81]The previous few rounds were also interesting. ||Liu "invites" the black horse to attack, and Yang does so indeed. ||Both have their own intentions. ||The question is, will this black horse live...?[/DhtmlXQ_comment81]
[DhtmlXQ_comment88]Yang sees that the horse at the bottom rank is done for, yet he calmly makes this move...[/DhtmlXQ_comment88]
[DhtmlXQ_comment89]But Liu does not want to catch that horse! Interesting development of events![/DhtmlXQ_comment89]
[DhtmlXQ_comment91]R4-2 would have been a better move.||This chariot play is rather risky![/DhtmlXQ_comment91]
[DhtmlXQ_comment92]Time flies ...||Both sides enter overtime on this move. According to the rules, they had to make 20 moves withing a span of 30 minutes or be ruled a draw. ||This move by Yang was a mistake, under the influence of the time constraint. C5+1 would have been much better! ||Please see the variations below![/DhtmlXQ_comment92]
[DhtmlXQ_comment97]Liu chooses to make this move, and it was a good choice![/DhtmlXQ_comment97]
[DhtmlXQ_comment101]Both Liu and Yang continue to go at it.[/DhtmlXQ_comment101]
[DhtmlXQ_comment109]In the past few moves, Yang shows his Xiangqi kungfu by maneuvering the cannon nicely. And he does not forget to eliminate the threat that the red pawn which has crossed the river might possess. He tries to simplify the situation.[/DhtmlXQ_comment109]
[DhtmlXQ_comment116]Despite the time pressure, the previous few moves show that both Liu and Yang are still very careful. ||Liu traverses the king to prevent the mate while Yang moves his cannon back and then maneuvers his chariot to threaten the horse. ||Both sides still play excellent chess and do not mess up the order in which they move their pieces.[/DhtmlXQ_comment116]
[DhtmlXQ_comment125]Red uses the pawn to block black's chariot.||Liu sees that he does not gain material if he played R2=3. Please see the moves below. ||After 4 hours of brilliant chess, both sides concede to a draw.[/DhtmlXQ_comment125]
[DhtmlXQ_comment126]The following moves were added to show why both sides decided to draw.[/DhtmlXQ_comment126]
[DhtmlXQ_comment128]and black would regain the lost material.[/DhtmlXQ_comment128]
[DhtmlXQ_comment1_108]This would also lead to a draw, but both sides have less chances for a victory.[/DhtmlXQ_comment1_108]
[DhtmlXQ_comment2_100]Therefore, Yang would be better off should Liu chose to make this move. Yang could play R2+1 orR2-1 to attack the red horse. Or Yang could choose to attack Liu's red horse with C2+3 .[/DhtmlXQ_comment2_100]
[DhtmlXQ_comment3_94]black has the advantage.[/DhtmlXQ_comment3_94]
[DhtmlXQ_comment4_94]black has the upper hand.[/DhtmlXQ_comment4_94]
[DhtmlXQ_comment5_96]black has the upper hand[/DhtmlXQ_comment5_96]
[DhtmlXQ_comment6_98]still black's game[/DhtmlXQ_comment6_98]
[DhtmlXQ_comment7_100]The red chariot is captured. black would win1[/DhtmlXQ_comment7_100]
[DhtmlXQ_comment8_89]this is what would happen if Liu decided to catch that horse.[/DhtmlXQ_comment8_89]
[DhtmlXQ_comment8_100]After a series of exchanges, Yang would have a the upperhand. Now, Yang is able to move C6=9 to capture back a horse and enter the endgame with more pawns. And Yang was a master of such endgames! ||Liu was correct is NOT caapturing the horse as he still has control.[/DhtmlXQ_comment8_100]
[DhtmlXQ_comment9_49]If Liu chose to play this move instead, Yang could counter with C2-4 or C9+4 , and Liu would be worse off.[/DhtmlXQ_comment9_49]
[DhtmlXQ_comment10_40]What happened if Yang did not take the pawn?[/DhtmlXQ_comment10_40]
[DhtmlXQ_comment10_47]Although Yang gains an advisor, but it cannot make up for the loss of the black horse. And Liu's defence is able to hold of any attack from Yang at this stage.[/DhtmlXQ_comment10_47]
[DhtmlXQ_comment11_35]uh oh||Yang had tempted Liu to take the chariot.[/DhtmlXQ_comment11_35]
[DhtmlXQ_comment11_41]when the horse is at the center of the palace, it is especially suspectible to a bottom ranked attack from the cannon.[/DhtmlXQ_comment11_41]
[DhtmlXQ_comment11_45]The red chariot is badly placed now...[/DhtmlXQ_comment11_45]
[DhtmlXQ_comment11_46]Yang could move C4+6 to take the advisor and victory would not be far away!||Yang may have lost a horse but gains much in the game.[/DhtmlXQ_comment11_46]
[DhtmlXQ_comment12_24]If Yang played this move instead...[/DhtmlXQ_comment12_24]
[DhtmlXQ_comment12_25]and Liu would still have the advantage.[/DhtmlXQ_comment12_25]
